Nadya Suleman
Nadya Suleman, age 33, gave birth to octuplets in California, on January 6, 2009
The single mother already had six children under the age of seven, all conceived by in vitro fertilization, before conceiving the octuplets in the same way. Suleman's extraordinary conception has been the focus of an ethical debate.
The octuplets born on Monday, January 26, 2009 were born nine weeks premature, but were all healthy. The six boys and two girls, being dubbed A-H, were all off ventilators the next morning. Doctors cautioned that some of the babies may end up needing to be put on ventilators again, however, and would probably remain in the hospital for two months. The babies will remain in incubators for six weeks, and the mother will breastfeed them.

Back Injury
In 1999, Suleman was injured while trying to restrain a patient at the mental hospital where she worked as a psychiatric technician. According to reports, Suleman was hit in the back with a desk by a patient. In August 2008, it was found that 90% of her back injury was work related and 10% was due to pregnancy. In December 2001, Suleman said she had spent most of her days in bed and was unable to care for her newborn. Suleman, who is now unable to work because of her injury, collected over $165,000 in disability payments from the state of California.
NBC Interview
On February 6, 2009, NBC aired part of an interview by Ann Curry with Suleman. The full interview will air on the Today show on February 9, 2009, and on Dateline on February 10, 2009. Suleman said that she dreamed of having a "huge family" because she lacked a "feeling of self and identity" and defended herself against the accusations that she is "selfish."1 On the same day, it was revealed that Suleman, who suffers from a "depressive disorder," collected nearly $168,000 for a work-related back injury she sustained in 1999.
Suleman's Doctor?
In February 2009, Suleman said the treatment for the in vitro fertilization that resulted in the octuplets was provided by a physician at the West Coast IVF Clinic in Beverly Hills, formerly known as the West Coast Infertility Medical Clinic. The treatment is believed to have been provided by the clinic's medical director Michael Kamrava.
Death Threats
Suleman's publicist, Joann Killeen, reported in mid February 2009, that Suleman had been receiving death threats and decided to move into a secure location for her family's safety. She has since left that location as the threats are no longer considered high risk.
Angelina Jolie Syndrome?
Members of the press have noticed an uncanny resemblance between Angelina Jolie and Suleman, many of them asking whether Suleman was intentionally attempting to emulate Jolie, including suggestions of plastic surgery. While Suleman has denied any sort of extreme fandom of Jolie, a source revealed that Suleman had attempted to contact Jolie through mail on multiple occasions. Jolie was allegedly "creeped" out by Suleman.
